Trail Time on Where Rockies

Devin Lyster

Canmore and Kananaskis are known for the vast trail networks that venture far into the backcountry. Many of these trails are tracks set for cross-country skiing, and many also have space for snowshoeing and fat biking. If you don’t know where to go, here are some of our favourite spots.

Canmore Nordic Centre
The Canmore Nordic Centre has trails for everyone from beginners to advanced. They also offer lessons and training for all levels, from never-seen-snow-before to national athletes. Want to take it to the next level? Try biathlon and combine your ski with target shooting. They have trails for classic skiing, skate skiing, and fat biking, and they also rent all the equipment you need from on-site Trail Sports. What’s more, they have a lit section of trail at night, so you don’t have to go home when the sun goes down.

Mount Engadine Lodge
Kananaskis has a vehicle-accessible backcountry lodge that offers an exceptional stay in a comfortable guest room or in one of their glamping tents. Enjoy fantastic food, disconnect from the digital grind, and enjoy stunning backcountry scenery, all without having to hike miles into the wilderness. Mount Engadine Lodge is at the base of adventures, with miles of trails starting right from the doorstep, including the popular Mount Shark trail networks. Whether you want to explore those trails on skis, take out a fat bike, or hike in with snowshoes, there is a fantastic experience waiting just outside your door. Didn’t bring your gear? Guests can rent for an easy adventure.
