Break Out the Skis

Snowy season means it’s time to break out the cross-country skis. Enjoy 35 km of groomed trails, perfect for skate skiing or classic cross-country, at the Hinton Nordic Centre. This is one of the largest Nordic Centres in Alberta! There are trails for everyone from beginner to advanced. Don’t have your own gear? Buy it at Maximum Outfitters or rent it from Vicious Cycle.

Go for a Snowshoe

A quintessentially Canadian winter activity, snowshoeing is a great way to get outside and enjoy the snow. Whether it’s a gentle winter walk, or something more extreme, there are plenty of great places to break out the snowshoes in Hinton. The Hinton Nordic Centre has groomed snowshoe trails, or explore what the surrounding area has to offer. The Joachim Valley Trail, starting opposite Jarvis Lake Campground in William A. Switzer Provincial Park, is a popular trail that leads to an abandoned plane and a spectacular cabin with a fireplace for a warm break at about the halfway point.

Bike All Winter

Every season can be biking season with the right equipment. The Hinton Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) grooms trails in the area for non-motorized winter activities, including fat biking! These trails are accessible from town in the Happy Creek area, which connects to the Beaver Boardwalk – a great place to take a winter stroll. If you’re venturing out, be mindful of other trail users. These multi-use trails attract runners, skiers, snowshoers, bikers, and even dog walkers.
