After the devastating fire that levelled Jasper National Park this summer, things are starting to reopen. As we start to think about what winter will hold, many businesses are open or planning to open and many are excited to welcome visitors back for the snowy season. If you're hoping to return to Jasper, here are some things to know about visiting the mountain town.

Marmot Basin is Excited to Open

The ski hill says, “Marmot Basin was fortunate not to sustain any structural damage from the Jasper Wildfire Complex, and our team is now focusing on getting everything ready for an incredible season ahead. Clean-up and infrastructure maintenance is now underway, and we are diligently working towards a November opening.”

Marmot currently has an early bird sale on their season passes. Book before October 15 to take advantage of perks and discounts not available to regular ticket holders, including discounts on all Mountain Collective resorts (with no blackout dates!), discounts on accommodations in Jasper, discounts on rentals and repair services, discounts on snow school lessons and food, and more.

What’s Open in Town?

Hotels, restaurants, and stores are working on reopening after the fire, and many are open already.

Is your favourite restaurant on this list? Or your favourite place to shop? Be sure to stop by and enjoy a meal or buy that special souvenir. These businesses will appreciate your patronage as they work hard to recover from the fire and subsequent closure of the national park. Please keep in mind that these places may be experiencing staff shortages, so pack your patience and be prepared to support your favourite business so they can be around for years to come.

What Else is Open?

Again, this is a changing situation, but Parks Canada is working hard to make your favourite trails and roadways safe to visit again. Please respect all closures as they are in place for your safety. Parks Canada is making sure these areas have no hidden dangers as a result of the fire – think unstable trees that could fall easily, mudslides now that the vegetation is burned over, and other natural hazards that weren’t necessarily a threat before.

What Else Should I Know?

Please be respectful when visiting Jasper this fall and winter. While many businesses are eager to have you back, many residents are still dealing with unimaginable loss as they try to find their way forward. There is currently a recovery area of town that is restricted for residents only. Please obey all signage and leave this area alone. People may still be grieving, and many residents will be in the process of rebuilding what was lost.
